| A young artist meets a country girl with potential talent for drawing, and tries to discourage her from pursuing a career as an artist. She earns the money to study art in New York, and the two young people's lives become increasingly intertwined. The girl's brief entanglement with a traveling salesman is a further complication in this weakly plotted novel: but the depiction of "bohemian" life in 1893 New York City makes this short novel worth reading. |
